Ecosystems need more biodiversity
Ecosystems can provide services that benefit humans, such as providing clean water, protecting soil from erosion, providing food, or sequestering carbon dioxide. Previous studies that looked at the effect of biodiversity on one type of ecosystem service at a time found that the benefits of increasing biodiversity tail off as diversity becomes larger, indicating that some species in the system are redundant.
