Cleaner stoves set to cut air pollution
Cooking and heating homes with biofuels such as wood, cow dung or crop residue can be a major source of black carbon to the atmosphere. This can lead to both atmospheric heating and surface dimming, which may cut evaporation and reduce rainfall. And it’s estimated that indoor smoke leads to around one million premature deaths in Asia. With these factors in mind, a team headed by V Ramanathan of the University of California, San Diego, US, hopes to monitor the effects of introducing clean stove technology to around 30,000 Indian homes.
