IPY data could be underexploited
One year and exactly halfway into the programme, International Polar Year (IPY) is already being described as an "extraordinary success." It's catalysed hundreds of new projects, explorations, collaborations, conferences and workshops that would otherwise not have happened, and has attracted funding from dozens of countries into new polar research (at the last count more than $400 m). However, according to the director of IPY’s International Office, David Carlson, the purpose and momentum of this ambitious programme could be severely diluted if it does not address the long-term issue of how to handle the reams of data it is producing.
