Adding iron only boosts phytoplankton growth under low light
Although researchers know that an increase in iron boosts primary production (the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide through photosynthesis) in oceans, the exact mechanism behind this phenomenon is still a mystery. Now, researchers have discovered that in the Southern Ocean phytoplankton growth in response to iron is limited to photosynthesis under low light levels. The new result will change the way that primary production in oceans is modelled.
