The way land is used directly affects the surface properties of the Earth, including the ratio of incoming solar radiation that is reflected back into space, or albedo. A study of land use/land cover over the last 30 years in the lower United States has found that the effects on surface albedo vary from region to region, with warming seen for areas that are no longer agricultural and cooling for areas that have lost forest. The results stress how important it is to include regional landscape assessments in models of climate change.
