New pathway for nitrogen loss found in deserts

Until now, scientists believed that the missing factor needed to balance nitrogen budgets in arid regions was in bacterial reactions in the soil releasing the element. But a new study by researchers at Cornell University, US, indicates that in the Mojave Desert non-biological processes are causing the loss of nitrogen to the atmosphere during summer.
