Gap-layer
A gap layer from the Weddell Sea in Antarctica. The image shows an upturned block of sea ice with thin snow cover overlying a layer of solid ice. The layer of sea ice is stained brown from high algal content, and the porous gap layer is beneath. Thick sea ice underlying the gap layer has less algal growth.
