The glaciological Conference "Ice and Climate Change: A View from the South" (VICC 2010) is to be held in Valdivia, Chile, 1-3 February 2010. The deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended by 1 month, until October 23. We have already received a large number of abstracts and count with a distinguished list of invited speakers, as detailed in the 2nd Circular (http://www.cecs.cl/vicc2010/). The objective of the Conference is to present new results and discuss ongoing cryospheric and climate changes in the Southern Hemisphere and their impacts and consequences on society and the environment, within a friendly and relaxed environment. Although the main focus will be glaciology and climatology, we hope to foster interdisciplinary discourse about climate change through the contribution of other disciplines in earth sciences and social sciences. The Conference is sponsored by the Fundación Imagen de Chile, which is supported by the Government of Chile, and organized by Centro de Estudios Científicos (CECS). Co-sponsors include the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS), the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Project of WCRP-SCAR, the International Glaciological Society (IGS), the Working Group of Snow and Ice of Latin America (GTNH) of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO and CEAZA (Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Zonas Aridas). As a complement to the science, we will be organising a social programme to allow attendees to enjoy the beautiful summer landscape around Valdivia.
The scientific topics to be addressed are:
- Ongoing cryospheric changes and related impacts in the Southern Hemisphere, including glaciers, ice sheets, ice shelves, permafrost, sea ice, snow cover and freshwater ice
- Climate of the Southern Hemisphere: variability vs. trends
- Remote sensing and geophysical techniques for cryospheric studies
- Modeling of cryospheric processes and data assimilation
- Similarities and contrasts with cryospheric and climate changes in the Northern Hemisphere
- Detection and attribution of cryospheric processes
- Societal impacts, risk management, economic impacts, adaptation, mitigation, management policies
In the Conference website you can find more detailed information,
including instructions for abstract submission.
