The 2010 International Mercury EXPO will be held April 22-25 at the College of William and Mary.

The EXPO will be an interdisciplinary conference that aims to explore creative ways to educate people about mercury in our environment and ways to minimize its hazardous potential to humans and the environment. The EXPO will combine presentation sessions typical of a scholarly conference with performances and exhibits that will appeal to a general audience.

Some of the planned highlights include:
- an exhibit of the W. Eugene Smith photos of the Minamata Bay mercury poisoning
- a scientific oral and poster presentation session, "From Source to Sink"
- a session on environmental communication through literature, writing, & film
- a session on environmental justice and activism
- a theater piece inspired by mercury

We are currently accepting proposals for all the sessions. We also welcome ideas for presentations not specifically addressed in our calls for abstracts. Below you will find more information on the scientific session being organized:

From Source to Sink
Mercury is a global pollutant, traveling great distances, in many forms as it is transported through the environment. What are the critical steps in this journey that determine the fate of natural and anthropogenic mercury emissions? What are the major areas of uncertainty that warrant further research? This session invites oral and poster presentations on environmental mercury research. The oral presentation session will conclude with a brief panel discussion involving all oral presenters.

Topics might include:

  • Natural and anthropogenic sources of mercury
  • Local through global scale studies
  • Methylation and bioaccumulation
  • Transformations and sources of mercury in the marine environment

Deadline: December 15, 2009
